Viktoria Kovalenko chose to come to England not only because it offered her refuge from the war in Ukraine, it was also a chance for her to escape from her harrowing memories of losing her family in a shell attack. Almost a year on from that ordeal, Kovalenko has found a temporary new home in a quiet English village with the kindness of volunteers, who helped her cross borders and apply for a UK visa.
